Racism in Sport

I chose to research racism in sport because I believe it is a growing issue that needs to be recognized by people in order for it to be understood and eventually ended. Racism in sport seems to be a daily occurrence in each and every sport and my researching this I hope to learn more.

Racism in Football;

I researched racism in Football for this task. I researched Samuel Eto’o and his recent racial dispute with his Turkish football club Antalyaspor. People invloved in the topic include Samuel Eto’o and Turkish football club Antalyaspor. Samuel Eto’o recently claimed that his new Turkish club are disrespecting him because of his ethnicity. The former Chelsea and Everton player said in an Instagram comment “Prehaps some people do not feel respect for me because I am black”. This comment was following a comment from Antalyaspor chairman Ali Safak Ozturk. Ozturk claimed no player is ‘above’ the club, people immediately decided this was aimed as a dig towards Eto’o therefore leading to Samuel Eto’o commenting his response.

I found each of my sources online.

Official Source- An official source is an official announcement about something that’s happened. It is usually available for everyone to read and is published by a major publication or released as a public speech or talk etc.

My Offical source for my subject is an article by The Mirror. The article was written by Liam Prenderville and was published on 22 September 2016. It is available at http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/samuel-etoo-dropped-antalyaspor-after-8891537.

Unofficial Source- An unofficial source is someone making an unofficial statement. This is ually on social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and son on. Unoffical sources are usually not one hundred percent true.

My unofficial source is a facebook comment posted by a man on a post by Soccer Laduma (an african sporting magazine). The comment reads “Turkey will never stop racism against Africans, ask helman mkhalele, the late John shoes just the few ,Eu and Au are turning a blind eye on this and it’s been happening fo a long time now. pi** off , perfect example is mushin Etugral,he is not short tempered, it’s just Turkey agenda but can’t help it because he is hungry.” The comment was posted by a man named Tibo Tee.

We use Official and Unofficial sources to find out infomation about a subject. Journalists usually use these sources in order to research and document infomation for upcoming articles.

Secondary research is information on a similar form as an official source, it is usually posted as a news report or article.

For my secondary research I found an article by BBC news. The article had no named author but was published on 21 September 2016. This article included more specific details such as the date Eto’o joined AntalyaSpor and the social media platform he posted his comment on. The article is availiable at; http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/37422880

Primary research is usually a diary, journal, document, recording, interview or video that is not edited. It was created at a specific time and remains the same and it is spoken by a person involved or close to the topic.

For my primary research I found an interview with Eto’o. The interview however was from 8 years ago but was still focused on his problem with racism; this informed me that Samuel Eto’o has been strugguling with racism for a long period of time. The interview was for a French sports programme called TFI. The interview was in french but had english subtitled throughout. The interview foucused on racism, Eto’o wanting to leave the pitch during a game and solidarity. The interview is avaliable at; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gSTxsN-44M
